Milk Paint can be a stain, solid color, paint or embossing paste depending on how much water you add. It adheres to porous and low sheen surfaces that are clean. Never to chip or peel on porous surfaces such as raw wood and plaster. A higher sheen or a resist creates a unique chippy look. To avoid a chipping look, apply an initial coat of Fusion Mineral Paint or Ultra Grip / Bonding Agent 12 hours prior.

Milk Paint Mixable Wood Stain offers unlimited customization through color blending. Beyond the standard stains, any Milk Paint color can be transformed into a custom stain by following the stain mixing protocol, giving you complete creative control. To create a washed look or stain out of milk paint, simply add more water to your mixture! See below for tips and technique on how to achieve your desired finish. Whichever technique you use, the finish will be unlike any other! After 3-5 years you can re-mix some stain and re-apply.

Step 1 - Preparation.  Make sure that your project is free of any previous top coats so that the Milk Paint Stain can properly absorb into the surface. This may require that you remove the previous layers by sanding them away, or using our non toxic Soy Gel Paint and Urethane Stripper.

Step 2 - Staining.  Mixture for Stain: Stir 1 part water to 1 part powder to a table cream consistency for a solid, opaque coverage. Paint out a sample to test. Add more water if too clumpy or more powder if too thin.  Apply paint evenly to clean surface. Light colors need an extra coat. Dip brush to bottom and stir when loading to avoid paint separation.

Dry / re-coat / cure time is about 30 minutes. Sand to smooth or distress surface.

Step 3 - Sealing.  Seal for a protective sheen and darken chalkiness with Homestead House, Fusion, or Alchemy waxes (all same formula), or food-safe VOC-free Hemp Oil or Salad Bowl Finish.  For high traffic surfaces, use Gel Stain Top Coat or a Stain and Finishing Oil (available in clear and many tints to antique at the same time).  Tung Oil for exterior projects. Water-based Tough Coat for light colors, 

Tip. Add Homestead House Milk Paint Extender to your stain to keep the pigments suspended so that your color remains even. Stir your Milk Paint every 10 minutes.
