Description

Gilders Paste Wax – Decorative & Metallic Gilding Wax

Give furniture, picture frames, mouldings, metalwork, resin castings, ceramics, mixed-media art and DIY décor a rich, dimensional finish with Gilders Paste Wax by Artist Supplies & Products.

Made in the USA, Gilders Paste Wax is a highly concentrated, wax-based color medium formulated with rich pigments for highlighting details, adding metallic accents, creating aged and antiqued effects, restoring decorative finishes and completely changing the look of a surface.

Use it straight from the tin for concentrated color and dry-brushed highlights, layer different shades for added depth, or blend colors together to create your own custom finishes. Metallic colors can be lightly buffed after drying to bring out a beautiful gilded sheen.

Whether you're restoring an ornate picture frame, highlighting an IOD mould casting, adding dimension to furniture details or giving metal hardware an aged finish, Gilders Paste Wax gives you tremendous control over the final look.

Perfect for Furniture, Crafts, Restoration & Mixed Media

  • Use Gilders Paste Wax to add color, highlights, shadows, patina and metallic effects to:
  • Wood – furniture, mouldings, carved details, picture frames, trim, railings, miter joints and restoration projects
  • Metal – wrought iron, steel, aluminum, cast metal, copper, silver, hardware, decorative metalwork and more
  • Resin – decorative castings, embellishments and DIY décor mould castings
  • Ceramics – terra cotta, planters, bisque and decorative ceramic pieces
  • Clay – polymer clay, traditional clay and modeling clay
  • Concrete and cement
  • Paper and papier-mâché projects
  • Gourds
  • Foam and other craft surfaces
  • Wax projects and decorative candles
  • Plastic and other properly prepared surfaces

How to Apply Gilders Paste Wax

  • Begin with a clean, dry surface free of dirt, grease, oil, wax, scale and loose material.
  • Apply Gilders Paste Wax with your finger, soft cloth, sponge, toothbrush, stencil brush, paintbrush or another suitable applicator.
  • Rub, stipple or dry-brush the wax onto raised details to create highlights, or work it into recessed areas to add depth and color.
  • Layer different colors over one another to create antiqued, aged, patinated or multi-dimensional finishes.
  • Mix colors together to create your own custom color palette.
  • For a thinner or more translucent application, Gilders Paste Wax can be extended with a small amount of paint thinner or mineral spirits to create effects ranging from a cream-like consistency to a stain or wash.
  • Very smooth surfaces such as glossy paint, glass, some plastics, smooth ceramics and polished metals may require light abrasion or an appropriate primer to give the wax sufficient tooth for good adhesion.

Drying & Buffing

  • Drying time varies with the substrate, application thickness, temperature and surface preparation. As a practical guideline, allow approximately 30–60 minutes before light handling.
  • Allow approximately 12 hours before polishing or burnishing.
  • After drying, lightly buff metallic Gilders Paste Wax with a soft cloth to enhance the metallic particles and create a richer gilded appearance.
  • Unbuffed finishes generally remain more matte to semi-gloss, depending on the color and application.
  • For frequently handled objects or outdoor projects, an appropriate UV-resistant clear coat can be applied after the wax has dried for additional protection.

Coverage

  • A small amount of Gilders Paste Wax covers a surprisingly large area.
  • One 30 ml tin covers approximately 30 square feet.
  • Actual coverage varies depending on the applicator, substrate texture, thickness of application, use of solvent and desired effect.

Has Your Gilders Paste Wax Hardened? Don't Throw It Away!

  • One of the advantages of Gilders Paste Wax is that hardened product can often be rejuvenated.
  • Work with only the amount you need and add a few drops of paint thinner, mineral spirits, turpentine or an appropriate turpentine substitute. Mix thoroughly until the desired consistency returns.
  • Do not use oil-containing cleaners or solvents, because the added oil can interfere with drying.

Gilders Paste Wax Colors

Colors may appear different depending on your screen, lighting, substrate color, surface texture and application method. Metallic colors can also change dramatically when buffed or layered over dark versus light backgrounds.

African Bronze – A green-toned metallic with gold-colored flakes. Beautiful for leaves, vines, botanical details and aged finishes where you want green with a flash of warm gold.

Antique Gold – A deep, rich metallic gold with warm red undertones. Ideal for traditional gilding effects, antique finishes, ornate furniture and vintage-style décor.

Black – A cool, rich black that works beautifully on its own or for shading and deepening other colors. Excellent for creating contrast and aged detailing.

Black Forest Brown – A very dark, smooth brown with excellent depth and saturation. This nearly black-brown shade is ideal for antiquing, shadowing, wood tones and creating custom dark colors through blending.

Bronze – A light metallic bronze with yellow-gold undertones and noticeable metallic particles. It creates a brighter bronze finish that can read almost like a softly aged pale gold.

Canary Yellow – A bright, clean primary yellow inspired by the vivid yellow of a canary. Use it for cheerful accents, detailed artwork or mixing with other colors to create custom greens, oranges and warmer shades.

Celtic Bronze – A light greenish metallic bronze with subtle green undertones. It combines the brightness of gold with a cooler, softly antiqued finish.

Copper – A rich metallic brown-copper with an aged patina appearance and subtle shimmer. Excellent for creating worn copper, industrial and vintage-metal finishes.

Cream – A soft off-white with a very slight yellow warmth. Beautiful as a neutral on its own and especially useful for lightening or tinting other colors.

Coral Red – A muted, bronzy red with charcoal depth and subtle silver and copper metallic character. A sophisticated alternative to a bright traditional red.

Damson – A deep plum purple with rich jewel-like depth. Its appearance shifts beautifully depending on the surrounding and layered colors.

Foundry Bronze – A deep brown-bronze metallic with warm golden character. Excellent for industrial, antique-metal and traditional foundry-inspired finishes.

German Silver – A warm metallic silver with a subtle golden influence. Less cool than a traditional silver, making it easy to pair with both warm and cool color palettes.

Gold – A bright, classic yellow-gold metallic reminiscent of traditional high-karat gold. One of the brightest gold shades in the Gilders Paste Wax palette.

Inca Gold – A warm gold with a noticeable brass influence. Slightly deeper and more antiqued than the classic Gold shade.

Iris Blue – A deep, solid blue that adds richness without the severity of black. Beautiful for layering, shading and creating dramatic jewel-toned finishes.

Oil Rubbed Bronze – A deep, bold dark brown accented with subtle antique-gold metallic flecks throughout the finish. Ideal for hardware, metalwork, furniture details and projects where you want the classic look of oil-rubbed bronze with just a touch of warm sparkle.

Orange – A bright, warm orange balancing yellow and red. Use it as a lively accent or blend it with other colors to create warm custom shades and autumn palettes.

Patina – An aged copper-inspired tone that instantly adds weathered character. Excellent for creating vintage metal, oxidized copper and layered patina effects.

Pinotage – A deep, dark wine red named after the Pinotage grape. Beautiful for rich shadows, sophisticated red accents and adding warmth and depth to blended colors.

Rich Gold – A deep metallic green-gold with cooler undertones. An elegant choice when you want gold with more depth and an aged, sophisticated character.

Rust – A warm brown-orange designed for realistic rusty and weathered effects. Also works beautifully in autumn-inspired color combinations.

Sandalwood – A deep brown with warm red undertones. Richer and warmer than a neutral dark brown, making it excellent for wood tones, aging and shadow effects.

Silver – A strong metallic silver with a slightly pewter-like character. Use it for bright metallic highlights or mix and layer it with other shades to create custom metal finishes.

Slate – A versatile light blue-grey that can function as either a blue or a grey. Excellent for layering, blending and creating soft weathered finishes.

Tulip Red – An intense primary red with strong, clean color. Perfect as a dramatic accent and useful for traditional primary-color mixing.

Verdigris – A deep green inspired by aged metal patina. Wonderful as a base or layering color for creating weathered copper and oxidized-metal effects.

Violet – A soft, delicate purple that adds subtle color without overwhelming a project. Beautiful for decorative accents and custom color blending.

White – A cool, clean white useful on its own or for tinting and lightening other Gilders Paste Wax colors.
